Macromarketing Milestones

The first Macromarketing Seminar was organized by Professor Charles Slater at the University of Colorado in August, 1976. Since then, an unbroken series of 34 meetings has been held annually. Sometimes referred to as the “macromarketing seminar” and at other times as the “macromarketing conference,” these meetings have convened in the U.S. (25 times), Canada (3), Norway (2), Australia (1), Croatia (1), the Netherlands (1), and New Zealand (1). Along with the creation of the Journal of Macromarketing in 1981 and the incorporation of the Macromarketing Society on March 1, 2004, these gatherings define macromarketing as a separate field of scholarly knowledge. For further information on the history of macromarketing, see Stanley J. Shapiro. 2006. Macromarketing: Origins, development, current status and possible future direction. News from the 2008 Macromarketing Conference:

The 2008 Charles C. Slater Award for the Best Paper in JMM during 2006-2007 went to Roger A. Layton. Dr. Layton's solo-authored paper "Marketing Systems - A Core Macromarketing Concept" appeared in 2007 (vol. 27 no. 3, September 227-242. The concepts of this article will be valuable to all macromarketers as Dr. Layton defined a marketing system and explained how marketing systems can be researched. Dr. Layton is an emeritus professor at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia.

The George Fisk Award for Best Paper of the 2008 Macromarketing Conference also went to Roger A. Layton. Dr. Layton's solo-authored paper "On Economic Growth, Marketing Systems and the Quality of Life" In this extension of his previous work on marketing systems, Dr. Layton considers what terms are uniquely "marketing" terms. He answers that marketing systems and assortments (which are outcomes of marketing systems and their flows) are such unique terms. Economic growth, entrepreneurship and externalities are also given treatment with regards to marketing systems.

The Robert W. Nason Award for Contributions Above and Beyond the Call of Duty went to Roger Dickinson. Dr. Dickinson retired from the University of Texas at Arlington in 2007. During his career, he contributed in a variety of meaningful ways. Dr. Dickinson is a past Slater Award winner. Most notably, Dr. Dickinson served as the Communications Editor for the Journal of Macromarketing for years. During his term as Communications Editor, this section in JMM became recognized throughout the marketing academy as a source of wide-ranging knowledge characterized by intellectual vibrancy.
